Being Lazy

|
Some people see gambling as the easy way to riches. Al they have to do is pick out a few winners put on a bet and take wheelbarrow to the bookies to pick up their winnings.

If it was only that easy.

Some people are so lazy they do  not even make their own selections but rely on newspaper tipsters or even more stupidly pay supposed "experts" to give them the horses to bet on. Is it any wonder that it is the bookies driving the big cars and not the punters?

To be a successful punter you have to invest time and money into the enterprise. The more that you know about your subject the better should be the results. I suspect that most punters could not tell you the difference between a novice, maiden and claiming race.

I know punters who claim that there is too much to know about racing that they specialise in one aspect such as e flat, national hunt or all weather. This makes a great deal of sense as on some days there can be 5 or 6 meetings and it is impossible to spend the time required on 30 or 40 races.  Most systems have some type of self filtering rules such as ignore 2 year old races or avoid handicaps which helps cut down the field but even so you could be left with 18 or 20 races to be access.

I tend to avoid low grade races on the All Weather tracks as from what I can see they seem to involve mainly the same horses running against each other with a different winner popping up each time. However, if I had spent the time to study the All Weather I might be able to get the same kind of return as a friend of mine who back predominantly at these type of meetings.

At one time a serious punter would have to fork out a wedge of cash to get a quality form book but nowadays I find that I can find most of the information I need on the Racing Post web site www.racingpostcom . Other good sites I use are www.attheraces.com and www.adrianmassey.com which is a free ratings site.

So there is no real reason why any punter should not be able to access all the information that they need if they are prepared to make the effort.

Someone once said that "knowledge is power". I don't know whether that is true in racing, punters have very little power but also the majority have very little true knowledge. That is why they go in day after day seeking that elusive "big" win.  In fairness to punters the majority will tell you that it is their hobby, and that they get pleasure from a flutter and that is fine. Most of us do not expect to make money from our hobbies but if you want to be a successful punter you have to treat your betting as a business and work at it accordingly.

Let the lazy ones have the fun while you make the money.
