Being Greedy

|
Have you ever laid back, closed your eyes and dreamt of winning the lottery? If you have and lets face it who hasn't at some time what did you dream about, not winning the £10 or even a few hundred thousand pounds. No it was the BIG one that fired your imagination, the multi million pound jackpot win.

To be quite honest most of us do not need millions and millions of pounds to find financial security and a happy life. For most a few hundred thousand would make all the difference but there is that element, greed that makes many people want more than they have or are likely to get.  If I remember rightly greed is one of the seven deadly sins and we all suffer from it to a greater or lesser degree. Confidence tricksters would not be able to operate if it was not for that inborn greed inside most of us.

The mistake many punters make is to try and achieve a life changing bet that will provide a life changing sum for a minimal outlay. Betts such as the Scoop6 , Accumulators, Canadians and Yankees cater for this need. They Are very popular with the Big bookmakers for 2 reasons, firstly they are rarely successful and when on the odd occasion a punter gets lucky the national publicity it attracts far outweighs the win payout.

Serious punters rarely place anything other than single bets. To find out lets look at an example. If you had a success rate of 40%, that is 4 out of 10 selections won and the average odds were 5/2 this would look like this:
£10 at 5/2 win = £100
£10 lost x  6     = -£60
Profit                +£40

If you had doubled up your selections if both winning selections had been in sequence you could have won £125 and lost £30 giving a profit of £95 but more likely despite having 4 winners you would have lost £50.

Despite what you may read in some advertisements horse racing and gambling is not a get rich quick scheme. Anyone should be able to make a regular profit from horse racing. This is especially true since the advent of the betting exchanges but it will be achieved only by a steady and regular growth and not some big instant win .

Greed is an emotion and racing is an emotional sport. Stand in any race crowd or in the bookies and the race nears its conclusion and you will see all the emotions. Lovers of  racing and gambling tend to be emotional about it, but not the really successful gamblers. They have the ability to remain aloof and above the raw emotion of the sport. In fact with some it is impossible to tell from their looks or behaviour whether they have won or lost on a particular race.

Your returns will improve dramatically if you accept little and often rather than big and rarely (usually never).
